Stargaze Cherry Springs State Park - National Public Observatory Stars-n-Parks - Official Dark-Sky Park Cherry Springs State ParkStargazer's Paradise Cherry Springs Milky Way ---- Photos by: Dave Wymer---- 9/12/99 Aurora At Cherry SpringsPennsylvania's First Official Dark SkyPark!Home Of The Black ForestStar Party& The National Public Observatory'sStars-n-Parks ProgramForMore Info Contact:Thom Bemus, Coordinator - NPO Stars-n-Parks CSSPLast Updated: 7/22/07---- I was fortunate enough to stumble upon Cherry SpringsState Park in May of 1992 while looking for dark observing sitesaround Coudersport, PA. (pop. ~3k). After just one night of observingit became obvious that this is one of the very darkest sites inthe eastern U.S. and I've been observing from the park ever since.Over the years I've been to many other observing sites all overthe U.S. and to this day Cherry Springs remains my favorite placeto stargaze anywhere, having the winning combo of being safe, easy to get to, but still secluded enough to have really pristineskies. The local area is dominated by farmland and vast tractsof state forest lands so there are very few sources of local lightpollution. Potter County has only three traffic lights and a totalpopulation of ~17,000. Coudersport is 15 miles to the northwestand nearly 1000' below the ~2400' elevation of the park. The nearestsources of significant light pollution in the region are StateCollege, PA. (metro pop. ~80,000) ~75 miles and several mountainranges to the south and Olean, NY (metro pop. ~30,000) about 50miles to the northwest, so as you can imagine THE SKIES AREVERY DARK! The limiting magnitude is usually in the 6.7 rangeand approaches magnitude 7 on very dark, transparent nights. CherrySprings is also far enough inland from Lakes Erie and Ontarioto escape most lake-effect cloud cover events. A good illustrationof the sky darkness at this location is that when a cloud driftsby it is BLACK, there is simply no skyglow to illuminate it.---- With good reason Cherry Springs State Park is rapidlybecoming a new mecca for amateurs from all over the northeastU.S. and the Niagra Region of Canada who are seeking the darkestskies. On any given dark-of-moon weekend you'll almost certainlyfind dozens of amateur astronomers enjoying the velvet black skiesthat are so uncommon for most of them at home. Like California'sfamed Fremont Peak, Cherry Springs is within six hour drive ofliterally thousands of amateur stargazers.---- Radium Springs, New Mexico-basedNational Public Observatory, made CSSP the flagship park for its Stars-n-Parks program. Thisprogram seeks to protect the night skies in and around America'spublic parks, to bring public education astronomy programmingto those parks and to promote eco-tourism at parks all over theUnited States. With much of our population now living under severelight pollution, few understand or appreciate the wonders of adark country sky and for these folks visiting a protected publicpark may represent their only chance the see the night sky asit should be seen. Astronomer/educators are now conducting freeeducational stargazing programs on scheduled weekends, click belowto see the schedule.Stars-n-Parkswhere the milkyway comes out to play !Cherry Springs StatePark Public Stargazing NightsPlease read and observethe following stars-n-parks guidelines to get themost out of your evening under the stars and then check schedulebelow for dates and times.1) PUBLIC STARGAZING NIGHT ARE FREEand open to the general public. The evening begins with a slideshow that explains so of the basics of stargazing and displaysthe kind of objects that will be viewed. As the skies darken weuse a special high-power green laser beam to point out the prominentconstellations and other interesting sky sights. We then moveon to using telescopes and binoculars to explore the wonders ofPotter County's pristine night skies.2) STARGAING IS HELD ON A WEATHER PERMITTINGBASIS, the skies must be at least 1/3 cloud-free.3) IF YOU ARE NOT STAYING UNTIL DAWN PLEASEPARK YOUR CAR in the parking area next to the airport side(east side) of Rt. 44. When leaving please drive out thelower campground exit so your headlights do not bother those stillstargazing.4) THE GROUP WILL GATHER AT THE GRAVEL PARKINGAREA on the east side of Rt. 44 and walk about 75 yardsto the observing terrace.5) DRESS VERY WARMLY since temperaturesand windchills at the park's elevation drop very quickly aftersunset; a hat, gloves and heavy jacket are suggested, even inthe middle of summer. Do NOT wear shorts!6) NO WHITE LIGHTS are allowed, pleasedim your flashlight with a red filtering material or a paper bag.7) CHILDREN ARE WELCOME BUT MUST BE CLOSELYCONTROLLED since all of the equipment is both privately-ownedand fragile.8) BATHROOMS are available nearby inthe camping areas.9) BRING INSECT REPELLENT if it happensto be a warm night.10) BRING YOUR BINOCULARS or telescopeif you like.11) IF YOU HAVE TROUBLE STANDING forextended periods of time bring a folding chair you can carry forsome distance. Cherry Springs islocated 15 miles southeast of Coudersport, PA. on PA. Rt. 44.The park is deep in the midst of the Susquehannock State Forestjust 11 miles south of U.S. Rt. 6 / PA. Rt. 44 junction at SwedenValley. When looking at a map of the whole state Cherry Springsis located just about at the center (along the east/west axis)of the state, about 30 miles south of the NY/PA borderline. Clickhere to answer the question "AREWE THERE YET?!" or to see maps of the region and park.---- The park's facilities include: fresh cold-water taps (springthrough fall), a primitive camping area with picnic tables andfire rings, a large picnic shelter, well-cared for pit toilets(sorry, no showers) with red lighting and an approx. 300'x600'open observing field. If you have a small plane you could evenfly-in to observe, by using the airstrip adjacent to the park.LIST OF THINGS TO REMEMBER TO TAKE:1) Flip-Flops or Water Sneakers if you go to take a shower,Camping facilities are crude, clean pit toilets and water areavailable (spring through fall) but there are no showers on site. You can buy a shower at Ole Bull State Park (15 miles south ofthe park) or at several nearby commercial campgrounds. Anothereffective way to stay clean is to use Depends Wipes (yes, thepeople who make the adult diapers), they'll keep you clean withoutthe goo on most wipes. 2) Bring a good camera and more film, in addition to thefabulous night sky sights, there are some spectacular scenic vistasnear the park and lots of wildlife to take pictures of.3) Bring some shade, assuming you set-up on the observingfield and it is a hot weekend, you'll fry.4) Bring the good walking shoes, the park area just begsfor on-foot exploration and there are lots of nice hiking trailsin the immediate area including those along the rim and bottomof the Grand Canyon of Pennsylvania."Official"CSSP Astronomy Observation Field Rules & Other Info:Be aware that thereis a $4/night/family user-fee forusing the observing field. The feeis deposited in the fee tube near therestrooms and info kiosk, your fee stubmust then be displayed on your vehicle. 1) Absolutely NO white or bright light sources are permittedon the observation field unless it is 100% cloudy. If you need to contact someone in the case ofan after-hours emergency someone MAY hear the phone ringing. Pleasedo not use this number unless it is a real emergency or peoplewill simply begin to ignore the phone if it rings. If no one answersthe payphone, you can reach the park office at 814/435-5010and leave a message during business hours. Failing either of theothers you can call Chip or Maxine Harrison at home at 814/435-2518,but please only use this as an absolute last resort.NOTE ON CELL PHONE SERVICE AT CSSP: As of mid-June2007 there is marginal cell phone service availabe on the observingfield. However, the signal is very weak and may not work for somefolks, so don't count on it. Be aware that though we have beenable to make calls out of the park, as of now it appears mostincoming calls don't come through due to the weakness of the signal.POLC's PA. & CSSP Light Pollution Maps-- ClickHere To Read Commentary About Observing At Cherry SpringsState Park ---- Click HereFor Rick Kellogg's Quantitative PROOF Of How Dark CSSP's SkiesAre --ClickHere To Find Out How To Donate To The Cherry Springs Dark SkyFundA Fund To Help Make CSSP An Even Better Place To Stargaze STARGAZE CHERRY SPRINGS Resources:Upcoming Star Party Info:-- Informal Dark-of-Moon Stargazing --There Are Usually ATLEAST 40-100 Amateur Astronomers At CSSP On Dark-Of-Moon Weekends From May Thru October. From a modeststart of about 600 tourist-days in 1999, stargazers at CSSP accountedfor over 1900 tourist-days during the year 2000, a growth of over300% in just one year. Remarkably, this growth came despite asummer astronomy season with some of the most unfavorable weatherconditions of the last decade. It is estimated that during theyear 2000 nearly $100,000 was poured into the economy of PotterCounty by the amateur astronomers who frequent Cherry SpringsState Park. Restaurants, motels, bed & breakfasts, gas stations, convenience stores, grocery stores, gift shops, hardware storesand even institutions like the PA. Lumber Museum all benefit fromthis economic boost. The stewardship of park manager, Chip Harrisonand the designation of CSSP as Pennsylvania's first official dark-skypark and have sparked this growth. The challenge for the futurewill be to foster and protect the unique (the best stargazinglocation east of the Mississippi) dark-sky resources at CherrySprings State Park by carefully controlling regional light pollution. If the dark skies of the Cherry Springs area are preserved, aslight pollution in other parts of the eastern U.S. and southernOntario continue to degrade the skies in those areas, stargazingeco-tourism will only grow faster at CSSP. CSSP is also home tothe first of the National Public Observatory's Stars-In-The-Parksprogram, which will also help foster the growth of astronomy atCSSP. Since 2000 the use of Cherry Springs State Park has expandeddramatically. In 2002, the Black Forest Star Party exceeded 600attendees and this one event alone accounted for more tourist-daysthan CSSP saw during the entire 1999 season, the 2002 season'stotal tourist-days count jumped over 4,000 of a little over doublethe year 2000 figures. This also translates into over 1/4 milliondollars per year being pumped into the local economy. Though thegrowth rate has slowed a little from its initial dizzy pace, stargazingeco-tourism at Cherry Springs State Park now appears to have establisheda sustained growth rate of about 30% per year, with more and morestargazers from all over the eastern quarter of North Americacoming to CSSP on a regular basis. |
